What is an oral surgeon and maxillofacial surgeon?

An oral surgeon is a dental specialist that has not only completed a 5 year undergraduate Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree, but has also completed an additional  3 year postgraduate Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent) degree in oral surgery.

A maxillofacial surgeon is a dental specialist that has not only completed a 5 year undergraduate Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree, but has also completed an additional medical degree (MB ChB) and a masters in oral and maxillofacial surgery (MDS).

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon diagnoses diseases, injuries, and defects of the jaw and surrounding structures and performs surgery to correct them. This can, for example, include managing facial trauma that results from a car accident, tumour etc.  Oral and maxillofacial surgeons also specialise in tooth removal, the extraction of wisdom teeth and placement of dental implants.
